About The Classic

The grand finale of the Breeders' Cup World Championships is the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, a weight-for-age Thoroughbred horse race for 3-year-olds and up run at a distance of 1 1/4 miles on dirt - and for the second time in two years, it will be a conventional dirt surface. In 2009, Zenyatta made history by becoming the first female to ever win the Classic, beating out Kentucky Derby champion Mine That Bird, turf champion Gio Ponti (who finished second) and Twice Over (third) with her patented last-to-first move.

The 1 1/16-mile, $2 million Breeders' Cup® Juvenile Fillies features two-year-old Thoroughbred fillies at their best. This series had produced 17 out of 20 winners that went on to become year-end champions. In 2008, Stardom Bound was the 8/5 favorite and came from way behind to win it at a time of 1:40.99. Dream Express came in second while Sky Diva took third place.

The one-mile, $1 million Breeders' Cup® Juvenile Fillies Turf was run for the first time in 2008 and was part of "Female Championship Day", the first day of the Breeders' Cup where all five of the races for female horses were carded together. Like the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, the Juvenile Fillies Turf is limited to 12 starters. In 2008, Maram won it at a time of 1:35.15 while Heart Shaped came in second and Laragh took third place.

The $2 million Breeders' Cup® Filly & Mare Turf was first introduced to the Breeders' Cup World Championships in 1999. The race is either 1 1/4 miles or 1 3/8 miles, depending on the configuration of the host track's turf course. This year, it will be run at the 1 3/8 mile distance. The winner in 2008 was Forever Together at a time of 2:01.58, while Sealy Hill came in second and Wait a While took third.

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint, has been added to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships beginning this year at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint will be run as a six furlong race open to 2-year-old colts, geldings and fillies, and will be contested on the main track for a purse of $500,000. The new race will have a maximum of 14 starters.
